The budget build; it’s an art form. Building a car on a limited budget has always been a rewarding challenge, and they are especially popular today given the current state of the economy. Not only are builds like this easy on the wallet, but it it’s even more rewarding when you put a hurtin’ on guy in the next lane who could have easily spent five times what you did.
This specific build features a 1986 Mustang. The Stang was originally acquired for a whopping $110. To be completely honest, at the time the car probably wasn’t worth a penny more. It started out with a 351 Windsor, and the owner, Jace Nester, decided that a turbo was in order. When the 351 didn’t hold up, the motor was swapped out with a 408 Windsor. Both Ford engines ultimately produced nothing but problems.
After his fiasco with Ford motors, Nester decided it was time to call the local salvage yard and find some Chevy LS small block power for his project. The Windsor was replaced with a cammed LQ4 truck motor, and it has been all smooth sailing since. To make things even better, he decided to top it all off with an 80 mm turbo. All in all, the build was wrapped up for about $12,000 for everything including the car. That’s not too shabby for a car that gets down the strip in a hurry. As you’ll see in the video above, little test and tune at Cecil County Drag strip shows the car’s ability dial in consistently in the low 9s.
