Superchargers or turbochargers; which do you prefer? Most people usually have to choose between one type of forced induction or the other (though many run nitrous as a “backup” if you will.) “Twincharging,” or the art of using both a turbo and supercharger system, is nothing new, but its still a relatively rare occurrence that results in some impressive horsepower numbers and a lot of speed.
The MTI Racing twincharged Camaro, which we already reported was the pace car at the first-ever NARRA US GT race, attacked the standing mile and they’ve posted a video on Camaro5 of their 202.8 mph at last month’s Texas Mile.
Recent innovations in remote, or rear-mounted turbochargers, have allowed the use of some awesome twin-turbo systems. MTI Racing went with a remote twin turbo setup hooked to a Magnusson TVS 2300 supercharger. Remember how we said nitrous is often used too? Well this Camaro has a 100 shot, just in case they decided they’re not going fast enough. All of this on a beefy LS3 6.2 liter V8 engine
So what is fast enough? In this case, 202.8 mph in the standing mile seems like a damn impressive accomplishment for this 1,000 horsepower fully licensed and insured street car. Eventually they were able to take the car all the way up to 205 mph, setting a 5th-generation Camaro speed record. Take into account that the 2010 Camaro has the aerodynamic profile of a brick and weighs close to 4,000 pounds, and breaking the 200 mph barrier seems even more impressive. Congrats guys!
