Superchargers have been the weapon-of-choice for American automakers seeking to the horsepower and torque of their top-end models. Even the Chevy Corvette got in on the action with the 638 horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1. But a fundamental shift in the way performance cars are built is underway, and superchargers just don’t cut it anymore.

Instead, automakers are turning to turbochargers, which increase performance without crippling fuel economy, to provide the extra boost high-end sports cars need these days. According to a report from Car & Driver, a twin-turbo V8 version of the C7 Corvette could be a successor to the current Z06.

Car & Driver even goes so far as to claim this new performance Corvette will be called the Z07, though they were also among those claiming the Camaro ZL1 would actually be called the Z/28. So take from that what you will, but regardless, the spy pics (that we can’t show you) of a camouflaged, high-performance Corvette definitely indicate what most of us already assumed.

As far as the twin-turbo V8 goes, well, it certainly makes sense for the Corvette C7. Fuel economy and emissions standards mean that even the Corvette has to boost its efficiency, and GM has recently been on a whirly muffler kick. This includes not only the twin-turbo 3.6 liter V6 that debuted in the 2014 Cadillac CTS, but also the Cadillac Elmiraj Concept, which had a 4.5 liter twin-turbo under the hood.

A hint of things to come? We can only hope so, as such a car would easily surpass 600 horsepower, while providing Corvette fans their first taste of factory turbocharging. All the guys making big power know that turbos are the only way to go, and GM seems to have finally caught on as well.
