Altered-class drag cars are notorious for producing some wild and unpredictable rides down the quarter mile. Their short wheel bases, ultra-powerful engines, and contempt for conventional ideas of aerodynamics all come together in a perfect storm of suicidal mayhem that might rocket the dragster well into the 5 second range, or might just send it bouncing between the walls as the driver struggles to regain control. There was even a time in the 1970’s where altered fuel dragsters were banned from competition altogether because of their wild and dangerous runs that, quite frankly, scared the sanctioning bodies.
In this video we stumbled across on YouTube, we get a look at an A/AA Altered from down under that has a bit of a modern twist to it. Unlike its ancestors from the 60’s and 70’s, this Altered actually has some aerodynamics to it, and instead of using a fire breathing, nitro fueled blown big block as its power source, it uses a comparatively tame naturally aspirated LS1.
The car is owned by Mark Sheehan and is driven by Eddy Tassone, and they claim that with a supercharged combo this car went 5.69 at 249 MPH several years ago, making it the fastest Altered in the world (We can’t confirm this, but a cursory search didn’t reveal any NHRA Altered records in the 5’s). But in the video, Tassone takes the dragster to 7.30 at 174 MPH with this naturally aspirated, fuel injected LS1 on a rather drama free run (he does push a little towards the centerline at the big end of the track).
They believe that the car is capable of 6’s with its current combo, so keep your eyes peeled for more info on this car as we get it.
