Church Boys Racing’s ’64 Nova II Wagon Is No Throwback to Racing

The crew over at Church Boys Racing have proven that there is truth in the old adage, “Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.”

Taking a quick look in the staging lane and it would be easy to misjudge the ’64 Nova II Station Wagon. Sure, as far as grocery getters go, this is one of the coolest economy family cars of the early 60’s, but as a race car… seriously? Yes, seriously!

Church Boys Racing's 1964 Chevy II Wagon.

Early 70’s straight line racers took advantage of the very affordable price tag of these economy cars with full knowledge that the weight over the rear end aided the traction capabilities of skinny and hard street tires on launch.

The Church Boys took this retro idea and added a twist on their version of the economy wagon by adding some modern technology. Company owner, Chuck Church Jr invested in the wagon as a representation of his company, Church Boys Racing components in Bristolville, Ohio. The company specializes in high performance suspension components for classic Novas, and this is where the Chevy II wagon comes into play.

According to Church, the car is good for 13.74 in the quarter-mile, and is steady and reliable for family cruising at 24 mpg on their way to the races. For a vintage sleeper with a touch of modern technology, this is as good as it gets.
