In this thread on Pro-Touring.com, we found the documented start to one of our favorite topics; an LS swap into vintage iron! Forum member “rmk600” recently posted the progress he’s making on swapping in an EFI LS1 and an overdrive 4L60E into his sweet Hugger Orange 1969 Camaro. The Camaro came to him with a perfectly fine 350 small block Chevy, with Edelbrock heads, a 650 Holley carb, and a Comp Cams bump stick. Now there’s nothing wrong with respectable small block Chevy power, but I think we can all agree that there’s just something about the reliability, tuning capabilities, and power potential of an LS1 when it gets a few upgrades. So, don’t expect to hear us giving any grief about removing a perfectly good engine to gain all those benefits of the LS1.
Adapter plates make bolting up the LS1 easy, but it’s the oil pan and the headers that can cause a few headaches. The owner is using one of Holley’s sweet new cast LS1 swap oil pans and a set of Dynatech’s long-tube headers for their power, sound, and proper fit.
Currently, Hotchkis springs and sway bars in both the front and rear give the Camaro a Pro-Touring stance and better handling to boot. The car currently rides on 17” American Racing Torq Thrust II wheels, and even though you see them on almost every muscle car out there, they look so good on the Hugger Orange Camaro that we are reminded of just why they are so popular.
