So you’ve got an LS powered F-Body, Corvette, GTO, or even pickup with high mileage, and you’ve been contemplating refreshing the engine. Chances are you’re also going to be looking to get a nice bump in horsepower for your trouble, but you might not have the cash for a new high-performance crate engine. No sweat, because as we all know, that stock LS between your fenders has all the potential in the world to make a ton of reliable horsepower with the right parts. It’s time for a performance rebuild.

Golen offers their rebuild service in two displacement options: a stock 346 that keeps your factory crank, or a 383 upgrade that uses a Callies forged 4.00" stroker crank.
If you’re considering going this route, check into Golen’s LS rebuild service. Not every city or town has a machine shop that’s experienced with building LS motors, so the experts at Golen make it easy to get your LS rebuilt the right way.
Chad Golen, from Golen Engine Service tells us, “If someone has any car with an LS1, LS6, LS2, or almost any other LS based engine that needs a rebuild, but they don’t have $15,000 to spend on a new crate engine, then we offer our rebuild service as a way that they can get a more powerful engine, and not have to spend so much money.”

We all know the cylinder heads are the "magic bullet" of LS power production, and Golen doesn't leave them out of the rebuild process.
Sounds awesome, but there is just one problem; how do you go about getting your engine to Golen’s shop? Golen explains, “You just remove your engine, drain the fluids, remove the accessory drive, and pull off the sensors and anything else that might be easily broken, and you strap your engine down on a pallet. We will send a truck with a hydraulic lift gate right to your house to pick up your engine and bring it right to us.” Now, how’s that for convenience?
“The only real requirement is you have to have a running LS engine. It can’t be blown up or overheated; it just has to be running. It doesn’t matter if it has 200,000 miles on it; as long as it’s running, it’s a candidate for the rebuild service.” Golen adds.

Golen takes your factory heads and gives them a three-angle performance valve job, as well as their Stage 2 Bowl and Runner Porting.
Golen Engine Service offers two different basic rebuild packages and power levels for LS engines, and will re-use your block, heads, and engine covers to help save you money. You can stick with the stock LS1 cubic inches and make around 450 horsepower at the crank, or you can step up to a 383 stroker and make between 500 and 550 crank horsepower depending on the cam size. Either power level gets new forged Mahle pistons with anti-friction coating, Scat forged rods, while 383’s will get a Callies Forged stroker crank. Quality components like ACL main and rod bearings, a Melling Select Performance oil pump, heavy-duty ARP hardware, and a COMP hydraulic roller cam round out Golen’s LS rebuilds.
However, all those great parts won’t last long if quality machine work isn’t performed. So, before assembly, Golen bores your block to 3.905, zero-decks it, and hones it with a torque plate installed. They also line bore and hone the mains before a final pressure wash. On the top end, your stock heads get a three-angle valve job, as well as runner and bowl porting for better flow.

Golen adds a set of Manley stainless steel valves as well, measuring 2.02" for the intake valves, and 1.57" for the exhaust.
When your engine is all buttoned up, Golen re-pallets it and ships it right back to your door. Then, once you’ve got the engine re-installed in your car or truck, you just give Golen a call so they can walk you through the initial startup and break-in procedures. Easy as pie.
Golen’s LS rebuild service seems like a great way to get the power and reliability you’re looking for, while saving thousands over buying a brand new crate engine. Best of all, you’ll have the confidence of a 3-year warranty from Golen on your refreshed engine, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that full tech support is just a phone call away. Check out Golen Engine Service’s website for more info, or give them a call at 1-800-591-9171 to talk about their LS rebuild program.

Once you get your engine back you can sleep well at night knowing that it was assembled by a top notch shop with nearly a decade of experience building LS engines, and that you have a 3 year warranty with no mileage limit on your fresh LS.
