This past winter the Swedish Camaro Cup drivers packed up their cars and tools, and made the jump across the pond to run two of their events on American soil; one at Sebring and one at Palm Beach. In this video from Vimeo, we get to ride along with Swedish Camaro Cup driver Stefan Jacobsson in the Number 73 Prena Motorsports Camaro as it makes a few laps around Palm Beach International Raceway at what seems to be a practice session. (The video states that it was shot at Sebring, but we are pretty sure this is actually Palm Beach).
As you’ll remember from our previous coverage of the Swedish Camaro Cup, the cars are only 5th Gen Camaros in appearance. Underneath they are a fully build race chassis, with power coming from a GM Performance Parts ZZ4 small block Chevy crate engine. Never the less, they are still a blast to watch and will hopefully stand as inspiration for Americans to start a Camaro Cup of our own, with real 5th Gens.
To get a bit more info on the race, we looked up Prena Motorsports website, and found out what Jacobsson had to say about the two races in Florida. In a rough Swedish-to-English translation, Jacobsson says, “Our first stop was the Sebring Raceway in Florida. The training went well, but the track felt a bit grainy. The surface is made of concrete and seashells in order to keep the heat on the track, but it wears tires terribly. The first race I ran in fifth place but spun and ended seventh.” Unfortunately, it would be more of the same for Jacobsson at Palm Beach with car troubles keeping him from finishing. “The car started to just go from bad to worse, so had to stop the contest.” he says.
