It really is true that Chevrolet has a Camaro for just about everyone. The SS for street enthusiasts, the ZL1 for road-course hounds, and now the new COPO for die-hard drag racers. In this video posted to YouTube by Motor Trend, Hot Rod Magazine Editor David Freiburger guides us through an in-depth look at the COPO and GM’s Wixom Performance Build Center where performance LS engines are born. Even though the video is just a tad bit out dated since GM has in fact released the horsepower numbers, official weight, and other specs – the video is still very, very cool.
In the video, Sandor Piszar, Director of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports for GM, reminds us that the COPO is a drag only package and can’t be licensed for legal use on the street. “Back in 1969 the COPO Camaro was actually a production vehicle. You could license it, put a plate on it, and drive it on the street. The 2012 COPO really is an all-out racecar…it has a serial number and no VIN Number.”
At the Wixom Build Center, the GM show off one of the Supercharged 327 LSX engines on the dyno, as well as all the cool equipment they use to tune it. Afterwards, the Hot Rod editors get their own turn behind the wheel of one of the new ZL1’s, and we get a brief look at the new 1LE handling package. As a special treat, at the end of the video “Mr. 5th Gen Camaro” himself, Al Oppenheiser shows us how easy it is to do a smoky burnout in a ZL1. Check out the video for yourself here.
