Certain vehicles make a statement about the driver. A Cadillac says “I win at life.” A Corvette says “I like to go fast.” And a Chevy El Camino? That says “I couldn’t decide between a car or a truck, so I got both!” Indeed, the car-based El Camino inhabits a special place in the annals of automotive history, and even though they’ve been out of production for 25 years, people still find ways to make El Caminos cool.

Up on eBay is easily one of the coolest El Caminos around. Rather than be boring and predictable by dropping a LS1 engine under the hood, some creative crafter decided to make a mid-engine El Camino. We love it.

This isn’t quite a finished car, though it appears as though most of the hard work is done for you. The seller says the point was to create a fast, agile muscle car with superior weight balance. The mid-engine El Camino certainly fits the bill. It is mounted to a six-speed Porsche transmission and utilizes an independent rear suspension. That’s some pretty modern stuff for a 1966 El Camino.

The builder also flared the fenders, shortened the bender, shaved the diprails, and all-in-all got very hot roddy with this El Camino. The black primer look only helps give this El Camino a sinister look, though this project needs finishing. There is no interior to speak of, just a completely flat floor (no more transmission tunnel needed). No windshields either from the looks of it.

Basically, this project just needs a final few touches to bring it all together. The Buy It Now price of $20,000 leaves plenty of room for other custom features, so our only question is…why not?
