You won’t find many people suggesting that the 5th-generation Camaro and its LS3 engine are underpowered. Yet on the same token, there are engines within GM’s lineup that would make a lot of sense in the new Camaro. Take, for example, the LS7 V8 currently found only in the Chevrolet Z06. We can’t help but fantasize about what a lovely addition it would make to the Camaro.
Throw in some fine tuning, a couple of turbochargers, and you’ve got yourself a 900 horsepower supercar at a bargain price. Redline Motorsports is behind the creation you see in this Road Test TV video, and even during a soft launch, this mega-Camaro shows how much horsepower it harbors.
A stock LS7 in the Corvette Z06 is already an impressive engine, churning out 505 horsepower and 475 ft-lbs of torque without any forced induction assistance. But once Redline adds its HTR900TT pacakge, which includes two turbochargers running around 14 psi, the power nearly doubles to 900 ponies. We don’t have to tell you that’s a tremendous amount of power.
The problem now is putting that power to the pavement. The video above is a “soft launch” at low boost settings and with a cautious driver. Even so, the Camaro HTR900TT screams down the drag strip in just 11.15 seconds @ 139 mph.
Make no mistake, this is easily a 10-second car…and could perhaps even push into the single digits with higher boost, lots of traction, and a perfect run. Kind of makes you wish GM made a LS7-powered Camaro now, doesn’t it?
