Here in America, the station wagon is all but dead. Once the preferred method of mass family transportation, the station wagon fell out of favor as sport utility vehicles gained popularity…at least in the U.S. In Europe though, station wagons (or “estates” as they are sometimes called) are still popular with everyone, including the police. Volvo remains a leading manufacturer of station wagons in Europe.
While we wouldn’t call the performance of Volvo wagons inspiring, many of them do have one advantage; rear-wheel drive. Carbuzz came across this video of the “Volvette”, a Volvo station wagon wearing policy livery and hiding a Corvette Z06 V8 under its blue and white bonnet (that’s Euro-talk for “hood”).
Yup, gone is the Volvo engine, and in its place is a 405 horsepower LS6 engine, found exclusively in the 2001 to 2004 Corvette Z06. These engines are bargain power plants, even over in Europe, and because Volvo has such an emphasis on safety, vehicles like this V70 wagon have an engine bay wide enough to accommodate a much larger engine.
Why the police livery? We don’t know, but this car does come from Sweden, a country known for its impractical modifications to once-practical cars. The Volvette displays remarkable driving and drifting prowess for such an unwieldy machine, and it kind of makes us want to return to the days when big-block station wagons roamed the roads.
Leave it to the Swedes to make station wagons cool again.
