There is a new trend sweeping the automotive customization world, and it is called PlastiDip. While PlastiDip itself has been around for nearly 40 years, only recently has the idea of covering your car front-to-back in a rubberized matte black paint really gained traction. In addition to looking menacing, PlastiDip prevents rock chips while leaving the paint beneath it unharmed. Seems like a win-win, right?
Still, would you ever cover an entire car like the Camaro ZL1 in PlastiDip? Because one Camaro ZL1 owner did, raising the ire of muscle car fans…though his reasoning seems sound, and there is no doubting that this PlastiDipped Camaro supercar looks absolutely wicked.
To wit; this is indeed a REAL Camaro ZL1, and the owner who goes by the handle “blackcam2ss” on the Camaro5 forums defends his PlastiDip by saying that he plans on taking the car to the track. The PlastiDip will hopefully protect the car from rock chips and flying debris while on the track. For what it is worth, we love it when owners of cars like the Camaro Zl1 actually take them to the track, knowing full well it could detract from the value.
But blackcam2ss hopes the PlastiDip will prevent most of the chipping and whatnot associated with track days. When all is said and done, removing the PlastiDip isn’t difficult, as it is designed to just peel off without damaging the paint below. Knowing all of that, it almost seems like GM should offer it as a factory option. If you could get your Camaro PlastiDipped from the factory, would you?
