There is absolutely no doubt that GM’s LSX-based engines have put their mark on the performance car industry. The LS1 first showed up in the C5 Corvettes back in 1997, and then found their way into the F-body platform along with variations trucks and sport utility vehicles. Just like the previous generations of small block GM power, it wasn’t long until these motors were modified. One of the teams pushing the boundaries of the LSX platform is the he Ohio Boys and their LSX Drag Radial F-body, and next season, these innovators are looking to go even quicker and faster in 2013.
Back in 2003, LSX enthusiasts Mike Brown and Steve Turley built a 1996 Formula Firebird and began to race it all over the tri-state area. Because they were from Ohio, people referred to them as “The Ohio Boys”, and the name stuck. The Formula had an unplanned meeting with a track wall early on, so Brown began campaigning a 2002 Collector’s Edition Trans Am, while Turley built a Camaro to race. Brown and Turley then proceed to go really fast with this pair of boosted LSX terrors. Brown eventually decided the Collector’s Edition was too nice to cut up, so he built his current Trans Am.
Soon the team was joined by Mark Koehler and they built his gorgeous Trans Am. Turley is not actively driving today, but helps the team out at every big race.
In 2012, the Ohio Boys had an amazing season with new personal bests and lucrative triumphs, including Brown’s win at the LSX Shootput at Indy and Koehler’s LSX Drag Radial championship. The team is looking to take their ERL powered cars to the next level, by doubling up on turbos. The team recently announced that they will be using Garrett turbos and moving to a twin turbo set up versus their current single set up. They will be kicking off the 2013 season in South Georgia at Lights Out 4, along with the LSX series races and other major drag radial races in the Midwest.
