It seems like nowadays, you can swap a LS engine into just about anything. So long as there’s a will, there’s a way.

In this video from YouTube user BigKleib34 – he conducts a short interview with the owner of this 1993 Mazda RX-7, which under the hood, rests a turbocharged LS1 that dyno’d at 1,200 horsepower to the wheels.

“It’s a ’93 Mazda Rx-7. It’s got a LS9 block in it, a $100 LS1 crankshaft, and it’s got an 80 mm turbo. Behind that, is a T56 Magnum transmission with 3.31 gears and a solid 8.8″ 4-link rear end like a Mustang’s style, and its got a Treadstone intercooler. Nothing too crazy. It runs on E85, and has 1,600 cc injectors. ”

When you’re at 1,200 horsepower in a car that came from the factory with 4 times less than that, you’re going to need to tape your gaps!

He goes on to say that his first dyno pass had made 800 horsepower due to him forgetting to open the cut-out. On the final pass, he decided to turn up the boost to 20 pounds, resulting in 1,200 horsepower at the wheels. The car was able to achieve a 9.30 in the quarter mile at 163 mph, and that was launching off of an idle too.

He believes the car is very reliable, stating – “The car should be able to run in the 8s. It’s been running for 3 years. I mean, the heads (cylinder heads) have never been off. It gets over 20 (miles per gallon) on the freeway, and weighs 2,900 pounds.”
