Meet This Not So Mellow Yellow LS2 Powered GTO

A day of racing is about to begin.

A day of racing is about to begin.

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to bring a few of our project cars (like our 2000 C5 Corvette Project Y2K) out to the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California for a test and tune session. It had also happened to be the weekend of the NMCA West Street Car Nationals qualifier and eliminator rounds. That’s when we ran into avid drag racer Brenda Cox, and her 2005 Pontiac GTO.

There were a lot of cars at the 3-day weekend event, but Brenda’s GTO really stuck out among the others. Now it may have been because of the extremely bright yellow paint, which is almost like a skittles color. But we’re going to say it was her extremely high energy, and her great attitude. She was easy to approach, and loved talking about her car.

IMG_0039GRGRBrenda purchased the car brand new in 2005, and made her first pass only 1 year later in 2006 here at Fontana. Since then, she’s been hooked, and the car sees track time every month. Over the past 10 years she’s owned the car, it’s only accumulated 44,000 original miles. Most of which are from the track, Brenda commented.

Making the most out of the naturally aspirated 6.0 liter LS2, Brenda has incorporated some great bolt-on parts which include Kooks long tube headers, a custom cat-less X pipe, ported and polished cylinder heads, and a high-stall torque converter for the factory automatic transmission.

Some of the other modifications include Harland Sharp rocker arms, a ported throttle body and air intake, and upgraded push rods from Manton.

We had a blast interviewing Brenda and her Pontiac GTO. Brenda no longer daily drives her GTO, and wants to keep the car low mileage and as original as possible. She currently doesn’t have any plans for a power adder, however, she commented “We definitely have plans for more bolt-ons in the future. This is a mid 11-second car, and we want to go faster!”
