Mk4 Supra Trades In Its 2JZ for an LS3

We stumbled across a photo of this beautiful Mk4 Toyota Supra on an LSX-related Facebook page and dug through the internet until we found its lucky owner. Maybe luck has nothing to with it, though, as James has spent countless hours and dollars getting this build the way it is now.

It all started back in early 2014, when he found the perfect Supra on a forum and the rest was history. This ’93 Aerotop started its life naturally aspirated and automatic… every car enthusiast knows that had to change. A previous owner converted it to the widely-loved twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE with a 6-speed manual transmission. When James bought it, the TT beast held a plethora of bolts ons– the car was fun, but he wanted even more. He opted for a six-liter LQ9 swap but, after its completion, it only lasted 3,000kms (that’s less than 2,000 miles)! James said, “I think it had a harsh life before I got it.”

After his poor luck with the six-liter mill, he decided to swap in a 2016 LS3 crate engine. But he wasn’t about to leave it stock either. After about six months of blood, sweat, and tears, it is now pushing 404 horsepower to the rear wheels. Its housing a custom twin 2.5-inch header-back exhaust system, high flow cats, a custom twin 4-inch intake system, a mild cam (224/228), a custom tune, and a  Torsen limited-slip differential. “My favorite thing about the car is the exhaust sound– that snap, crackle and pop,” said James. Power is put down through a T56 six-speed transmission, paired with a Harrop short shifter. The car is sitting on Bilstein coilovers with independent rear suspension and 18×9/18×10 Volk GT-N 2 pieces wheels, which are wrapped in 245/35 and 285/30/18 Federal RS-R tires.

Did we mention that the car is right-hand drive? Because it is.

“I have loved cars since before I can remember. My current car is a mix of both import and domestic–East meets West! I have owned Deloreans, Supras, and S2000s in the past and I would love to extend my list and own some euro and old school muscle cars as well… Just not enough money, time, or space to do it all at once,” said James. True car guy issues. You are not alone, James.

So, that’s two legendary engines– an LSX and a 2JZ. Which one would you rather have, the amazing torque and throttle response of the naturally aspirated V8 or the exhilarating ride and power that can only come from a twin-turbo setup? A twin turbo LS is probably the solution to that conundrum, but we’ll leave that to James.
