During the weekend Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series event Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Gunter Schaldach experienced a stuck throttle in the CoolTV Camaro. A YouTube video shows the cars coming into the turn, when the Camaro fails to slow for the turn. Schaldach lays on the brakes as clouds of smoke erupt from the rear in hopes of slowing the car before plowing into the #40 Mazda driven by Joe Foster. Commentators on the Speed Network notedd the failure of the Camaro to dip as it approaching the braking area for the upcoming turn; based on what is seen the commentators suspect that the throttle was stuck open leaving Schaldach unable to slow the vehicle.
Once the Camaro made impact with the Mazda, the hood flies up and pieces of the racecars go flying. Both cars go through the sand, but Schaldach’s Camaro was carrying so much speed that it literally flew over the fence and outside of the racetrack area. One of the commentators remarks that this was near the same area where AJ Foyt had experienced a similar incident years ago. Eventually the safety crew was able to confirm that Schaldach was out of the vehicle and appeared to be okay. The Mazda driven by Foster came to rest against the stacks of tires used as a safety barrier near the wall. Both drivers survived without serious injury, but seeing a Camaro careening through the air and the driver walking away gives merit to the safety equipment found on modern racecars.
