Fueling the Fire: Katech And X-treme-DI Team Up On Direct Injection

As vehicles roll off the assembly line year after year, they come with inherent problems. These complications aren’t necessarily the fault of the manufactures — most are self-induced by the consumer and can create a plethora of nightmares for performance aftermarket companies. A prime example of this has been the battle with GM’s latest direct-injection fuel system on the LT series engines. Some of the solutions have been larger pumps, a few have reworked the factory units, methanol injection is pretty common, and some companies offer a delete kit so you can go back to the standard E.F.I. Katech however, had a completely different approach for the power-hungry LT enthusiast.

The First Xtreme-DI fuel system was installed on a C7 ZO6 Corvette which 965hp and 900 lb ft of torque.

Their solution is a complex, yet simple idea on how to handle the additional fueling on direct injection. Instead of modifying the factory unit, Katech, with the help of Xtreme-DI, decided that adding an additional pump would be a solid solution. After seeing the results in the video it looks like they’re on the right track.

Uwe Ostmann, Founder and President of Xtreme-DI states, “the pump is so scalable that there’s no real limit.” With that said Mr. Ostmann did mention that the limit is now in the fuel injector. As with all things modified, you fix one problem and another one will arise. Xtreme-DI is developing a new direct fuel injector that will be able to support 1800 horsepower at the wheels. So, It’s safe to say that this pump with the new injectors will be good for over 2000 horsepower at the flywheel on race fuel.

This system simply installs with the existing fuel system for a clean factory look.

According to Katech’s Chris Meszaros, the Director of Engineering Operations, they were in charge of creating the bracket that would hold the secondary pump, fuel trims, and dynoing the test car. Meszaros also stated, “this system will work with the OEM fuel system.”

While it was designed for the LT4 and LT5 engine platforms, it can be utilized with any gasoline direct-injection engine. Ostmann added, “the nice thing about the Katech Xtreme-DI system is that it integrates with the factory controller.”

The Xtreme direct injection pump is designed to OEM standards and is validated for production run times up to 300,000 miles.

This will basically give you total control of the fueling through, injection durations, pressure levels, and even idle stability. This system “talks” to the OEM computer to know when to decrease the output of the secondary pump.

Remember gang, this system is designed for a car that needs to make 1000 horsepower and up. While most of us probably don’t need it, it is certainly a nice solution for those who do.
