What the…. Someone please tell us this is some kind of joke, because this Russian street racing video we stumbled across on YouTube features a rather comical and improbable outcome in a race between a 5th Gen V6 Camaro and the laughable Lada 2190. Ladas have often been the butt of jokes among performance enthusiasts from around the globe – infamous for their weak and wheezy engines, terrible handling, downright scary braking, and general Soviet industrial “blunt-object” build quality and styling.
This video seems to be shot at some kind of sanctioned street racing event somewhere in either Russia or another former Soviet Bloc country, based on the Cyrillic signs. As you will observe, safety is of the utmost importance at these events, and the crowd is held back from the street by a clothesline. From the very beginning of the video, it becomes clear that this probably isn’t your typical 78 HP 4-cylinder Lada based on its nasty exhaust note… that, or it has a hole in the muffler.
When the light hits green, the yellow Camaro rolls off the line like he just woke up from a nap, as the Lada’s raspy engine screams for redline. The Lada buzzes past the camera, and it almost looks like there could be an intercooler hiding behind its ugly plastic grille. The Camaro, try as it might, is just never able to catch up with the screaming Soviet turd.
During our research, we did come across some mention of a few Lada 2190 prototypes that were equipped with a Wankel rotary engine. Let’s hope this is one of them (that has been heavily modified); otherwise one of our beloved 5th Gen Camaros, V6 or not, just got spanked by arguably one of the worst cars on earth.
