A few weeks ago we reported that one lucky Camaro5 member was in the right place at the right time at Willow Springs Raceway, and was set to have their car featured on SPEED’s The Car Show. Now we have the full video segment for your viewing pleasure.
The competition premise is simple; fastest lap around Willow Springs wins. Adam Carolla drives a 2011 Ford Mustang RTR (Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s signature performance package) with a supercharged 5.0L Coyote making 540 horsepower, outfitted with a full Hotchkis suspension. Dan Neil gets the duty of wheeling the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, with just an intake, exhaust, short throw shifter, and a full Hotchkis suspension package. And finally, Matt Farah pilots the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 featuring the new 6.4L with 470 horsepower that’s bone stock except for a Hotchkis suspension just like the other two cars.
Farah goes first in the Charger, and turns in a pretty impressive 1.47 minute run around the track in the heavy sedan. Not bad considering the engine is bone stock. Next up Carolla runs in the Mustang, and during his blast around the track, he seems a bit nervous based on the in-car camera shots. Finally the supercharged Mustang gets the best of Carolla as he takes it on a little off track excursion, planting a rock firmly between the wheel and tire and eliminating him from the competition.
Finally, Dan Neil takes out the Camaro SS and really “gives it the beans” around Willow Springs – turning in a time of 1.46.8 – winning the competition, and the bragging rights for the Camaro. It was a fun little test, but you have to wonder what that Mustang RTR could have actually done in more capable hands.
