Welcome back to Wrecked Vette Wednesday (aka WVW). Now, no one likes seeing a destroyed Corvette, especially when it’s a C2. Nevertheless, we’ve got to face facts and know that not all of the Stingrays ever made can stay in perfect shape forever.
Coming to us from Insurance Auto Auctions (IAA), this 1966 convertible is a Rally Red Vette that played with fire and got burned, pretty badly we might add. It’s part of an auction that’s set to take place in New York in the near future, although currently no date has yet been set.
Taking a closer look at the whole package, a few things pop out at us. First off, it’s worth noting that the majority of this car is in fantastic shape despite the scorched sections. As a matter of fact, it’s rather odd when you notice that most of the front and sides of the car, as well as the entire rear, are relatively untouched by molten remains.
It’s only when taking into account the interior, the cowl, and some portions of the hood that the damage plays any factor. Even peeking under the hood, we see that the engine is still present and, aside from signs of aging and lackluster metal, intact.
This leads us to believe that the inferno started inside the cabin, and spread out across the seats, dashboard, doors, top, and windshield. It eventually reached the front before it was extinguished.
Could this have been from something as simple as a still-smoldering leftover cigarette? Or something as nefarious as arson? While we can’t say for sure, we do know that the Corvette deserves a chance at a restoration, if for no other reason than for being the most beloved of its lineage.
