Insane ‘Death Race 2000’ Corvette In Search Of A New Home

Soon to come under the hammer at Mecum Auction is the insane Shala-Vette featured in the 1975 film Death Race 2000 will roll onto the block in search of a new home. Themed much like Frankenstein, the main character of the movie, the Shala-Vette was created by James Powers and constructed by Dean Jeffries and George Barris. The car has been a part of the Mid America Motorworks collection, and is only 1 of 11 Vettes that will be sold at the upcoming auction.

Well known for its tricked out alligator appearance, this specially designed Shala-Vette was originally piloted by David Carradine who played the lead role of Frankenstein in the movie. Set in an apocalyptic future, drivers competed in a cross-country road race scoring points for making road kill of pedestrians.

Only around 10 of the Shala-Vette bodies were manufactured, and while it takes the appearance of a C3 Corvette, in reality it is more of a mish mash of various cars. Resting on a Volkswagen chassis there is a Chevrolet Corvair air cooled flat-six under the visible engine that is just for looks.

Sporting a three-speed gearbox, rolling on BF Goodrich T/A radials, the crazy reptilian theme is carried into the interior and has been dressed in diamond-stitching throughout as well as matching green carpet and a wrapped steering wheel.

Bidding will commence at an estimated price between $20,000 and $25,000. This rare piece of movie history will make its appearance at the Mecum auction from May 9th through the 11th. Expected to be a centerpiece and sure to garner some attention, what would you pay for your chance to own this piece of movie history?

Bridgett Davis

Growing up in Greenwood, Indiana a short distance from the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, my dad would take me to local car shows and events. Through this I gained my passion. Along with cars, I have always loved photography, writing, and graphic arts. However when attending college I did not pursue my passions. I played it safe and majored in business and marketing. After a few years in this field I determined this was not for me and began to pursue a writing and photography career. Landing me here with Power Automedia. I am also now the business owner of Bridgett's Toxic Creations. Specializing in automobile showboards, custom license plates, logos, and website headers. Living and breathing the Mustang life everyday in everyway. To be able to work in my field of passion is amazing and fun experience everyday. The best part is sharing a common passion with others.
