Who can say no to a fifth generation Camaro mobbing it up in the Formula DRIFT race series? No longer a “ricer” sport, we’re really impressed with how much control and skill it takes to drive at this level. Want an in-depth look at the 2011 Formula DRIFT Championship track from none other than Formula DRIFT driver Ryan Tuerck? Check out the Vimeo video above.
Started in 2003 as the first drifting exhibition competition outside of Japan, Formula DRIFT has increased in popularity and prestige. More complicated than drag racing and circle track racing, Formula DRIFT pits man and machine against asphalt as each team is tested on their vehicle control and driving ability. We’re not talking about just being able to drive fast and avoid other drivers, though. We’re talking about doing that all while executing controlled slides and tricky maneuvers for points. Believe it or not, it’s also done with modified American cars.
Tuerck is a Formula DRIFT driver and pilots cars for Red Bull. When YAER, a video production company that strives to creatively capture events, was at the 2011 Formula DRIFT Championship, they asked Tuerck to take them around the track.
Tuerck and the YAER crew hit the pavement of the Toyota Speedway for a walking tour of Tuerck’s maneuvers on the track. The result was the video above.
This video is not only interesting because you get some direct information about the course from Tuerck but also get to see him outside of the competition. So often, race enthusiasts only get a glimpse of their favorite driver if he’s not on the track, and this video gives us more of a laid back look at Tuerck and his sport.
We wish Tuerck and the Red Bull team the best of luck in next year’s Formula DRIFT season. Be sure to check out the video above for behind the scenes information straight from a Formula DRIFT driver.
