Lynch Runs 4.02, Berry Crashes New ‘Vette In Maryland Testing

This one is a real heartbreaker.

Popular doorslammer racer Keith Berry, who spent the better part of two seasons transforming his eight-second, IRS-equipped C5 Corvette into a state-of-the-art, twin turbocharged Outlaw Drag Radial car, went for quite a ride this morning during a mid-week test session at the Maryland International Raceway in preparation for this weekend’s Shakedown Nationals in Englishtown.

Berry’s Corvette, running in the left lane, took an abrupt and sharp turn to the left just beyond the sixty-foot marker and nosed hard into the concrete jersey barrier. Fortunately, the car glanced off the wall after the initial impact and spun to a stop, effectively minimizing the damage to just the nose. There has been some discussion that an axle failure may be to blame, although nothing has been confirmed. Most importantly however, Berry was uninjured in the excursion. The immaculate Corvette on the other hand, which made its debut just two weeks ago in Georgia, will need some body work before Berry and the WOOOO! crew can get back on track.

In other news out of Maryland, Outlaw 10.5 kingpin Tim Lynch and longtime tuner Steve Petty laid down the gauntlet in a big way this morning, cracking off the quickest (albeit unofficial) Outlaw 10.5 pass ever at 4.02 seconds and just over 192 mph. Lynch, in his stunning Proline-powered 2010 Corvette, reeled off a stout 4.08 at 190 and change in testing on Wednesday before turning up the wick today.

Records are expected to fall this weekend in Englishtown, and if the Lynch Mob’s numbers are any indication of what’s in store, the Shakedown Nationals could be a race for the ages. Dragzine will be in the house at Raceway Park all weekend, and if records fall, we’ll be here to bring you the story.
