Bad In Blue: PGA Golfer Kenny Perry

Bad In Blue: PGA Golfer Kenny Perry’s Turbocharged 1979 Camaro

Drag racing is a sport for people who love to compete because it’s a one-on-one duel where two people square off and only one moves on. Plenty of professional athletes that are gearheads have spent time around drag racing, and among them is PGA golfer Kenny Perry, who has been involved in the sport to varying levels going back a couple of decades. Now, Perry has teamed up with Heath Forshee to build a wicked no-time 1979 Camaro.

Perry’s first car was a 1979 Camaro, so it made sense for him to seek one out for a project vehicle. Perry was trading for a few cars and ended up getting this Camaro when everything was settled. The car had been previously owned by another racer. The chassis, along with many other important items, were already in place, and that made it the perfect canvas to turn into a no-time race car.

Perry and Forshee have been friends for a while, and since they both loved drag racing it made sense for them to partner up on this build.

“I really like this body style Camaro so it’s a lot of fun to be a part of this project. We used my driveline to get the car finished up. After Kenny got the car, we took it from a roller to a running car in a month. The plan is to race the car in stock-block events and no-time shootouts. We’re going to travel with the car as much as we can and race wherever it fits in,” Forshee says. Forshee will handle the driving duties when the car hits the track.

The Camaro is powered by a 5.3-liter LS with forged internals that was built by Mike Lough Racing Engines. The engine is topped off by a set of cathedral port heads and an intake from 417 Motorsports. Fuel is supplied to the engine through the intake thanks to a set of Atomizer injectors. Travis Ball built the turbo kit that works with an 88mm CRT turbo. Behind the engine, you’ll find a PTC-built TH400 transmission and torque converter. The LS-based mill is controlled by a Holley Dominator ECU.

The leaf spring suspension works with a custom fab-9 rearend and a set of Caltracs from Calvert Racing. Upfront, you’ll find a pair of Santhuff struts taking care of the Camaro’s suspension needs.

Even though Forshee is very tightlipped about the Camaro’s specific components, you can tell the car is fast. The drag strip is a totally different environment than the golf courses that Perry is used to playing on, but rest assured, he’s coming to the track to win.
