This week GM launched a unique and new to us campaign to expose the sixth-generation Camaro to automotive journalists from around the United States. The Find New Roads campaign puts journalists in the all-new Camaro for just over 24 hours, and sends them on a 500-plus mile journey through various scenic routs across the country.
For us, the journey began in Detroit, where Power Automedia video personality extraordinaire Paul Huzienga, picked by random draw a 2016 Camaro in the “Red Handed” hue. The car is a V6 1LT with the RS Package, and technology pack. While we were slightly bummed that we didn’t get the chance to test a new SS model, we’re sure GM will give us an opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of those in the near future for a long-term evaluation.
Don’t let the lack of two cylinders fool you, the V6 is no slouch of a powertrain. Consider that this all-new engine’s 335 horsepower output matches or exceeds that of the LS1 V8 in the fourth-generation F-body, and you soon realize that technology has come a long way. Cylinder deactivation in this model as well turns the car into a V4, allowing it to achieve the fuel economy of many econoboxes from just a few years ago.
We were able to use our Find New Roads journey to follow a few unbeaten paths and take the roads less traveled, so to speak, giving us photo and video opportunities that many other outlets weren’t aware of. From a little-known space museum, to the National Corvette Museum (NCM), and even a photo opp with a representative of every generation Camaro at NCM with help from Shelley’s Auto Sales and Art’s Corvettes, we enjoyed our trip.
In the coming weeks we’ll release more information about the car, what we liked and areas we think GM can improve, as well as a full video and editorial review of the car. Get ready, because this isn’t your dad’s Camaro, or your Grandma’s V6, and we were burning up the back-roads to get some awesome shots and info on what could be the best Camaro ever built.
