PRI 2016: Motec Auxiliary Shift Kit For Sequential Conversions

Motec has been producing engine management and data acquisition systems since the late ’80s, making them one of the pioneers in this field, which explains their dominant motorsports presence in racing series such as FIA WRC, British Superbike Championship, IMSA prototype, Isle of Man TT, Pikes Peak hill climb, even down to time attack, drag racing and local club racing.

We talked to Nick Baggett, applications engineer for Motec USA, while at the 2016 Performance Racing Industry trade show to see what products Motec is exciting to share with the world.

“Our sequential transmission shift kit does not require any externals controllers and works directly with the GPRP M130, M150, M170 and M190 ECU as well as our GPRPDI M142 and M182 direct injection models,” says Baggett.

“It is capable of handling the upshifts, downshifts, throttle blipping for rev matching and can even be programmed for a closed loop shift retry if the dog teeth mash up and don’t engage,” states Baggett.

“Everything is controlled directly through the ECU. You don’t have to worry about setting up any external controllers that add additional variables that may throw off your ignition or fuel calibrations,” explains Baggett. “There’s no confusion because everything is communicating through a single integrated system. The firmware already supports the external shift kit, so installation is as simple as connecting the kit and setting up the pertinent tables in the M1 tuning software.”

Today, Kyle is an experienced EFI calibrator; hot rod builder; and motorsports technician living in the San Jose area. Kyle is a track junkie with lots of seat time. You can usually find him racing his Mitsubishi Evo X in local time attack and road race events.
