SEMA 2016: A Look At American Racing Headers’ 2016-17 Camaro Systems

Imagine with us for a moment, if you will, that you just brought home your shiny new sixth-gen Camaro. You’re blissfully happy with the way it performs right off the lot; well, at least for a couple of months. The next thing you know, you’re adding simple mods like a cold air intake and possibly an axle-back exhaust. But then the bug bites hard and you are ready for some serious bumps in horsepower. Enter American Racing Headers (ARH)—known for some of the highest quality exhaust pieces around—with its new 2016-17 Camaro SS headers.

While a header and exhaust install takes a little more know-how than a cold air intake, the process is still relatively easy for any novice wrench tuner and you could be rewarded with up to an additional 30 horsepower, at the wheels—and that’s before a re-tune to take advantage of the increase in exhaust flow! In case you are unfamiliar with American Racing Headers (first, shame on you), all of its exhaust components are made from 304 stainless steel and are manufactured right here in the United States.

Its new headers for the Alpha-based platform are available in 1 3/4, 1 7/8, and 2-inch offerings. Each ends in a high-flow, 3-inch merge collector and features a thick flange to keep away the leaks. But they don’t just stop at the headers, they’ve got you covered all the way to your back door.

“The entire system follows in the tradition of our gen-five exhaust,” said Nick Filippides, who owns American Racing Headers. “There is going to be absolutely no drone or rasp with our headers or full exhaust systems—you’re just going to get a great sounding exhaust and nothing more.”

ARH provides exhaust systems starting with the headers and sells everything all the way back to the bumper for your sixth-generation Camaro. This includes a 3-inch mandrel bent exhaust made from the same high-quality 304 stainless steel that we discussed earlier and even an X-pipe and high-flow cats if you wish to retain them with your setup.

Filippides did, however, mention that they’re seeing an interesting trend concerning the diameter of primary tubing diameter that seems to be gaining popularity.

“We’re learning more and more through dyno testing that the difference between the 1 7/8-inch and the 2-inch aren’t all that different,” Filippides said. “The 2-inch is starting to overtake the 1 7/8—they are just flying off the shelf—and we don’t even offer them for the CTS-V, they are all 2-inch stuff. We are getting customers that are building for the future, so they get something that they can really grow into and that will support a lot of power.”

Surprisingly—or perhaps unsurprisingly since they share the same platform—the 2016-17 Camaro headers will bolt right on to the CTS-V as well, and vice versa. So, if you want to add a little bark and bite to your newly acquired Camaro, head on over to ARH.
