SEMA 2020: Performance Distributors LS And Pentastar SOS Coils

Performance Distributors’ line of SOS coils have been on the market for some years now and have proven their reliability and pepped-up performance. Each year the company expands the availability of these coils to meet the market demand.

This year the SOS brand has expanded to include LS engine ignition coils for Chevrolet Camaro (2016-19), Chevrolet Corvette (2014-19), Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2014-19), Chevrolet Tahoe (2015-19), GMC Sierra 1500 (2014-19), GMC Yukon (2015-19), GMC Yukon XL (2015-19).

“My 2017 Camaro SS was the guinea pig for this line of LS coils.  Although it had good acceleration when I bought it, our SOS Coils really improved the acceleration,” Company President Steve Davis noted. “It became very fun to drive!”

Davis explained the basic technology behind these SOS ignition coils allows the spark plugs gap to be opened up to 0.065”. The larger gap supports a more complete fuel burn, which leads to more power and performance. “Plus, they are compatible with flash devices and programmers,” he added.

“The LS SOS coils produce 28,000 volts under load in the acceleration phase. Stock units only produce 21,000,” said Davis. “That’s 7,000 more volts under load. Per coil. When you total it, that’s 56,000 Volts over a stock ignition per engine!”

Pentastar V6 Engine

Also new to the SOS lineup this year are ignition coils for the 6-cylinder Pentastar engines found in Challenger, Charger, Cherokee, Wrangler, Ram, or even Caravan models.

The story here is the enhanced coil windings which allow more voltage output than stock ignitions. More voltage means better capabilities for quicker starting and smoother idling.

“The one thing that 6-cylinder Dodge Chargers and Challengers have in common with Cherokees, Wranglers, and Rams is the need for a hardcore ignition,” Davis states. “Bumping up the plug gaps to 0.065″ with the SOS Coils wakes up these 6 cylinder Pentastars”

He also told us that a set of coils (Part #DUI-45550) for the Pentastar engine could be easily installed in an hour and a half with common hand tools.
