SEMA 2020: Turn One Introduces Type II Steering Pump Upgrade

When performing an LS-swap, it’s common to have a few problems along the way. And while a lot of research will help, you will still find out things the hard way. Turn One has recently addressed a problem with the factory LS1 F-body power steering pump when used in an LS swap. The OEM Type II steering pump, found in 1998-2002 Camaros and Firebirds, uses a CB-style bushing. These pumps are susceptible to incorrect belt tension and tension angle which can cause improper lubrication on the pump shaft.

Suppose you don’t run the factory LS1 accessory bracket on your swap. In that case, the odds of incorrect belt tension and angle are likely, which can cause rapid pump failure due to the driveshaft’s improper lubrication. To cure this power steering pump ailment, Turn One now uses an upgraded TC-style bearing pump commonly found under the hoods of Corvettes.

The revised LS1 pumps can be used on stock LS1 accessory drives as well as aftermarket units, even those that reposition the power steering pump. Turn One also offers an upgrade for those running a supercharger off the accessory drive belt. The upgrade protects the driveshaft from being traversed from the bearing due to the amount of torque a supercharger can produce.

Because the driveshaft diameters between the CB and TC pumps are different, Turn One offers an LS1 F-body upgrade pump kit that includes a billet aluminum performance pulley, which is much stronger than the factory composite pulley and looks better too. The cutouts offer easy access to the pump’s mounting bolts, making the pump installation simple because the pulley can remain on the pump during the installation.

Turn One offers its LS1 F-body upgraded pump in two stages, the HP1, which is an upgrade over stock, and the HP2, their high-performance line. Customers can also configure the high-pressure fitting to their liking. You can select the GM O-ring for use with the OEM reservoir or an adapter fitting to change the return connection to AN-6 fitting. Turn One can also custom tailor the conversion pump for LS swap applications in Mazdas, Nissans, Porsche 944s, BMWs, and other applications.
