This 1,100 Horsepower 6×6 Silverado Is The Wild One Of The Bunch

When you’re a farmer based in Ohio, you can have some spare time on your hands during those winter seasons. While the world is going all white and fluffy, you need to find ways to keep your hands busy and your mind sharp. For Bruce Bishop, that means constantly adding to his fleet of 6×6 Silverado trucks.

Bruce currently owns four of these fabulous rides and reports that he drives one of them daily since about the late ‘90s. Bruce’s first 6×6 truck was a 1985 Chevy, to which he added the second driven rear axle many years ago. It uses a 535 cubic-inch big-block for power with 4:10 gears and Detroit lockers in each of those rear differentials. He has since added a 2005 Chevy Silverado, along with a 2016 Silverado, also done up in 6×6 trim.

6x6 Silverado

Bruce’s first creation is this 1985 Chevy Silverado. He still uses this, or one of the other trucks in his fleet, for daily use.

Bruce does all his own fabrication work. All his creations feature air ride suspensions and all-wheel-drive configurations. His latest creation, this 2004 Bowtie brawler, is the only one that varies from that formula. Each wheel is articulated to help with steering, and all four rear wheels still clench for either turf or asphalt when the loud pedal is pressed. The main difference being the front wheels on this truck only concern themselves with steering. No lockout hubs are necessary.

Only the rear wheels are driven on Bruce's newest creation, but all wheels help direct the truck through traffic. At least when they're all touching the ground! The 3.5-inch King shocks allow for 25 inches of suspension travel.

Even as “only” a four-wheel-drive, Bruce’s latest creation is by far his wildest. It’s powered by an LS-based, Prestige Motorsports 427 engine that’s been boosted by a Whipple supercharger. The heads were treated to final porting and assembly by the Prestige folks in their Concord, North Carolina shop to work with the COMP hydraulic roller cam and other components of the build. The beast is fed through a Holley Terminator X fuel injection system and all Prestige engine packages are dyno tuned before heading out to the customer.

The bottom end of the build uses a Dart LS Next block, filled with a forged crankshaft, rods, and pistons as spec'd by the folks at Prestige. The engine belted out over 1,100 horsepower and 900+ lb/ft of torque on Prestige Motorsports' in-house dyno. All engine packages are tuned and ready to run when shipped to the customer.

Anyone can order this 1,100-horsepower package directly from Prestige if they want to make a bold statement in something similar to a wheel-standin’, six-wheeled monster such as this truck. The engine is located toward the rear of the bed, which helps it perform amazing wheelies at 30 miles per hour.

When it comes to covering territory on snow, turf, or asphalt, we can think of no better way to make a statement than by leaving wide tire marks and a whisp of tire smoke while doing a wheelie at speed. Bruce doesn’t consider this creation as much of a daily driver as the others. He calls it a “sand truck and ice cream getter” more than anything. He takes the truck to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan when he isn’t trolling for ice cream cones around his hometown.

No matter how you look at it, Bruce Bishop has a thing for 6×6 Chevy trucks. If you’re ever out and about in Ohio, keep your eyes peeled because you just might see him in one of his creations. Whether or not it’s doing a signature wheelie might depend on which one he’s currently driving, and if you ask him nicely to do one.
