The road to America was neither smooth nor straight for the Chevy SS performance sedan, and a long game of would-they-won’t-they took place before GM finally committed to bringing the Holden Commodore over for US drivers. Yet the writing is on the wall for the Commodore, with Holden ceasing manufacturing by the end of 2017, and with it goes the Chevy SS.
Before that happens though, GM has at least one more facelift in store for its muscle sedan. While the improvements are purely cosmetic, there’s still hope that an “ultimate” Chevy SS might still be in the works before its final sendoff.
The biggest change comes to the front fascia, which bears similar changes to those made to its Aussie cousin, the Holden Commodore. New vertical air ducts direct airflow over the front wheel openings to improve aerodynamics, and the new fascia also incorporates LED lighting. 19-inch aluminum wheels and a new hood with functional scoops rounds out the new face of the 2016 Chevy SS.
Under the hood things stay unchanged though with the 415 horsepower LS3 engine remaining the last of the LS engines in the Chevy lineup. More likely than not, the LS3 will do its duty until the plug is finally pulled on the SS, but there’s the hope that GM decides to shoehorn in the LT1 engine from the new Corvette, or even better, the supercharged 640 horsepower LT4. We’re more likely to see President Trump than a LT4-powered Chevy SS, but stranger things have happened.
