A reluctor wheel, also known as a tone ring or tone wheel, has a series of teeth on its outside edge that are read by the crank position sensor for ignition timing purposes. Depending on the LS engine, the wheel will have either 24 or 58 teeth. The OEM wheel is a two-piece design that’s made of stamped steel, so it’s not as strong as a billet wheel.
Since a billet reluctor wheel is a precision CNC machined part, it will be more accurate and will give better timing consistency over an OEM wheel since there’s less wheel deflection. This is very important in a high horsepower application where an accurate timing reading is a necessity so the engine will perform its best and not have any tuning issues.
