C8 Corvette And Hellcat Go Head To Head In Drag & Roll Race

C8 Corvette And Hellcat Go Head To Head In Drag & Roll Race

When the new C8 Corvette was unveiled, most enthusiasts knew that the mid-engine design would be superior to the older ‘Vettes. I’m not sure that we expected it to be as good as it is with a price point starting under $60,000. And while the new LT2 6.2-liter engine is rated at 490 horsepower at 6,450 rpm with 465 lb-ft of torque, how fast would it be? We have the track and the 0-60 times, but sometimes that doesn’t equate to street performance.

If you were ever wondering how the C8 would stack up to a 707-horsepower Hellcat, you need to check out Hennessey Performance Engineering’s (HPE) video. It seems the team at HPE has been taking full advantage of its C8 and lined it up against not only a Hellcat but a GT500 Mustang in another video as well.

When we first saw the video title, we assumed that the 707 horsepower Hellcat would walk all over the C8. In our heads, this made sense. The Mopar is cranking out 212 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque more than the C8.  However, the Charger Hellcat’s are known for being heavy and tip the scales at 4586-pounds while the C8 comes in at 3,647, which is  939-pounds lighter. That’s a pretty big difference, and it’s evident that the C8 is much more aerodynamic than the 4-door sedan.

For the first race, the two cars go from a dig. The C8 was first off the line, thanks to the traction control and the mid-engine design. The Hellcat tries to launch and spins the tires letting the Corvette get way out in front. While watching the video, this makes sense since the Charger has more power, but would the race be different from a roll? We expected the Hellcat to run away from the C8, but this was not the case. Once again, the C8 takes off pulling the Hellcat. The lead was short-lived as the Hellcat catches up to the ‘Vette and passing it, but it was still much closer than we had figured.

In our opinion, the C8 is an impressive machine, even with 490 horsepower. But, what’s this car going to be like with a 1,000 horses on tap? We can only wait and see.
