We have always been huge fans of the Chevrolet Camaro. In fact, we’ve owned almost every generation offered by GM since 1967. In 2002 when the car took a short break, we were sad to see it go like most of you. However, the pony car was brought back boldly in 2010 with an all-new look. While the Camaro has done pretty well in sales compared to the competition over the years, 2020 has not been so kind.
In the first quarter of 2020, Camaro sales were way behind the competition. The Ford Mustang was at the top of the chart with a 6.8-percent increase in sales, while the Dodge Charger and Challenger were down -10-percent. Camaro sales, on the other hand, suffered severely. Chevrolet only sold 7,185 units in Q1 2020 compared to 12,083 in Q1 of 2019. This is a difference of -40.5-percent. While we were hoping Camaro sales in Q2 of 2020 might pick up, that was not the case.
According to GM Authority.com, Camaro sales for Q2 in 2020 was only 6,675 units, a -46.31-percent decrease compared to the 12,433 Camaros sold in Q2 of 2019. However, the Mustang and Challenger are down as well, which is a sign of the times. For 2020 Q2, 15,717 Mustangs were sold, which is over twice the amount of Camaros. Even so, Mustang sales are down -27.32-percent when compared to the 21,625 units Ford sold in Q2 of 2019. Challenger sales are down -35.16-percent too, with 9,880 units sold for Q2.
Model | Q2 2020 /Q2 2019 | Units Sold Q2 2020 | Units Sold Q2 2019 |
Ford Mustang | -27.32% | 15,717 | 21,625 |
Dodge Challenger | -35.16% | 9,880 | 15,237 |
Chevrolet Camaro | -46.31% | 6,675 | 12,433 |
Mazda MX-5 Miata | 9.90% | 2,620 | 2,384 |
Nissan 370Z | 23.80% | 749 | 605 |
Toyota 86 | -24.7% | 645 | 854 |
Subaru BRZ | -20.94% | 570 | 721 |
FIAT 124 SPIDER | -42.76% | 581 | 1,015 |
Total | -31.78 | 37,437 | 54,874 |
The good news is out of all of the mainstream two-door sports cars in the US, only two of them were up in sales for Q2. The Mazda sold 2,620 Miata MX-5s, an increase of 9.90-percent, and Nissan sold 749 370Zs, a 23.80-percent increase over the 2019 Q2 numbers. The bad news is the Camaro has the worst percentage of sales for all of these cars. However, it still outsold the Mazda Miata, Nissan 370Z, Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, and the Fiat 124 Spider.
Overall, we feel like Chevrolet made some solid moves in 2019 by introducing the LT trim V-8 powered Camaro as an affordable performance option. We would also argue that this is the best car Pony Car on the market, it’s just missing its mark with consumers. And while sales have gotten worse for the car in Q2, we are still hopeful that it will recover.
