Chevrolet Announces “Last Call” For The 2020 COPO Camaro

There have been few bright sides to the Coronavirus pandemic, particularly if you’re a drag racer who was looking forward to a long summer of converting money into noise and tire-smoke. But if you’ve ever longed to have one of Chevrolet’s vaunted COPO Camaro’s in your garage, this year unlike any other could play directly into your hands.

Chevrolet announced the latest iteration of its factory-built COPO Camaro racecar at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last fall, highlighted by a special, one-off “John Force Edition” car. The 2020 models, like in previous years, were distributed via a lottery system of interested buyers, who, once selected, could purchase the vehicle through their local GM dealer. However, when the Coronavirus struck in March, Chevrolet briefly ceased automobile production across the nation as lockdowns went into effect, and with businesses closed and economic uncertainty at an all-time-high, prospective buyers of the latest and greatest COPO Camaro balked right as the cars were hitting the market. That left a sizable number of the 69 planned COPO cars unsold, and unspoken-for.

Now, as the world gradually returns to normalcy, Chevrolet is tossing aside its traditional lottery system that dates back to the first COPO production run in 2012, offering the remaining 2020 models on a first-come, first-served basis to any buyer with the cash and the appetite to own and drive the quickest and fastest vehicle that GM has ever produced.

States the Chevrolet team: “Now is the time to become a member of an elite club – the COPO Camaro family. This is your chance to own a piece of drag racing history. With fewer than 650 in existence, the track‑use‑only COPO Camaro is a work of art handcrafted for you by GM engineers, making it the perfect addition to your collection or racing team. Stand out in your 20‍20 COPO Camaro with more color options than ever before: two John Force‑inspired options, four base colors, and seven historic paint schemes honoring the original 19‍69 COPO Camaro. It’s time to be the center of attention.”

Todd Gallant, Chevrolet Performance’s COPO and Promotions Manager, says his team has already received numerous requests from buyers since announcing its “last call” for the 2020 COPO in recent days; short of committing to an official count, Gallant confirmed there were at least “a couple of handfuls” of 2020 models remaining for purchase.

Gallant tells Dragzine that Chevrolet Performance has yet to declare a decision on the future of the COPO Camaro program beyond 2020, and given that rumors have long persisted about the Camaro platform going dormant again entirely — which would naturally mark the end of the COPO program — a sense of urgency exists for any and all prospective buyers of these cars. Because, as Chevrolet made sure to iterate, “when they’re gone, they’re gone for good.”
