Chevy Shows Off Its Compact And Sedan SEMA Concepts

It is hard to believe that the 2012 SEMA Show is almost upon us. And yet already the advanced guard of automakers and aftermarket specialists are starting to converge on the Las Vegas convention center to set up their massive and impressive car displays. Chevrolet isn’t a brand to hold back, and they’ll be showcasing some of their more vanilla products and a decidedly flavorful way.

New Malibu

Most car enthusiasts may not get all that excited by the Chevrolet Malibu, even with the addition of a 2.0 liter turbo engine. But the Chevy Malibu Turbo Performance Concept remakes the mid-size sedan in a very cool way. With the 259 horsepower turbo four-banger at its heart, this super-sedan can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, to a top speed of 155 mph.

This inspired Chevy designers to create a car that looked more fearsome than the standard Malibu. This includes a unique body kit with custom lower grilles and fog lamps, clear tail lamp lenses, and other exterior mods that make it a lot cooler looking than your standard ‘Bu. On the inside are RECARO sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel. and black chrome trim plates that really up the ante on the mid-sized Chevy Malibu.

SEMA-Bound Cruze

Now we get into the smaller Chevys, which is one of GM’s fastest-growing segments. The General will bring two customized Chevy Spark microcars, two Sonic sub-compacts, and a classy version of the compact Chevy Cruze to SEMA.

The SEMA-bound Cruze Upscale comes with a classily-named Burnished Brandy Metallic exterior paint scheme and unique features to set it apart. On the inside is a brown leather-trimmed interior that should make this compact car feel like anything but. Does GM dare bring such a luxurious compact car to market though?

Chevy Sonic Concepts

Moving on to the pair of Chevy Sonic Sedan Concepts, GM got decidedly more speed-focused. This could be because GM already announced the Sonic RS would be coming to dealerships soon, and in continuing that tradition is the Sonic Z-Spec 1.5 and Z-Spec 2.5. The Z-Spec 1.5 gets a tuner-inspired look, a performance exhaust, and better brakes for spirited driving.

Meanwhile the Z-Spec 2.5 is a sedan model shows what is possible utilizing Chevrolet Performance and aftermarket upgrades. Can GM designers make the Sonic sedan look cool? That’s a tall order, but not impossible.

Get The Spark

Finally we get to Chevy’s smallest offering, and one of its most surprising sales successes, the Chevy Spark. With an 85 horsepower, 1.2 liter non-turbo engine, there isn’t much hope for performance fun from the Spark. But the Spark Z-Spec tries, and we can’t fault it for that.

The Spark Sinister draws its design cues from from urban industrial cliches, though we can’t explain the unnecessary spoiler on the hatch. There is also pictures of the Spark “Pink Out” car, but no mention in the press release. We’ll have to wait for SEMA to learn more about that one.

Which of these Chevy SEMA concepts has you most excited?
