Who hasn’t dreamed of enjoying the speed and performance of America’s sports car around a racetrack? We’ve spent the last two decades peering through the in-car video to try and grasp what it must be like inside one of the Corvette Racing powerhouses. Now, Chevrolet is not only allowing a windshield view of the experience, but if you’re one of the truly fortunate ones, you can find a seat in one of its new Corvette Z06 GT3.R racecars. The all-new GT3-spec car is scheduled to arrive for the 2024 season.
The car is built upon a strong foundation provided by the mid-engine Corvette Z06 supercar. The Z06 GT3.R will share the same aluminum chassis, a production engine modified for use in the racecar, and similar aerodynamic features. The Corvette Z06 GT3.R will be the closest link yet between the production Z06 and racing and is engineered to compete in customer-racing classes with both pro and amateur teams. The car is based upon the street-going Z06 and features the all-new, 5.5-liter LT6 engine. The car is definitely NOT street legal, but is modified with racing-specific equipment and will comply with FIA regulations.
The car goes beyond the standard street fare by coupling a 6-speed sequential motorsport transaxle behind the high-revving engine. The body is also comprised of wind tunnel-developed carbon fiber body panels. Wheels are also of the single center-lug design for quick removal. By introducing the Z06 GT3.R race car, Chevrolet allows privateers and teams to compete in both endurance and sprint races across multiple series.
Corvette Racing tweeted a short video highlighting the new amateur-class race car. Be sure to turn up your speakers. You can thank us later.
