The Chevrolet Corvette, a symbol of American automotive engineering most often refered to as “America’s Sorts Car”, secured 12th place in the 2024 made in America auto index, compiled by the Kogod School of Business. This annual ranking assesses vehicles based on their domestic parts content via data reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the American Automotive Labeling Act of 1994. This act requires automakers to disclose the origin of U.S. and Canadian parts, assembly location, and engine and transmission sourcing.
As expected, Tesla models dominated the top positions this year. The Model 3 Performance claimed the top spot, followed by the Model Y and Model Y Long Range in a tie for second. The Cybertruck took third place. The Model S and Model X are tied fourth with the automatic transmission versions of the Ford Mustang GT.
General Motors also saw the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon tie for seventh place with the Volkswagen ID.4. The ID.4’s improved ranking resulted from its shift to U.S.-based production in Tennessee.
The Corvette Z06 achieved 12th place in the index and the Corvette Stingray secured 14th place. Due to the date range used to compile the data the newly released Corvette E-Ray or the upcoming ZR1 was not eligible for this year’s ranking. We’ll have to watch for those on the 20025 and 2026 rankings.
The Corvette Stingray’s ranking experienced a shift compared to previous years. The Stingray shared seventh place with the Mustang GT in 2023 and held third place in 2022. Even though the Corvette’s percentage of U.S./Canadian content has actually increased in the past year, other manufacturers improved their domestic sourcing, impacting the Corvette’s position.
Other GM vehicles on the made in America list include Cadillac sedans and crossovers, along with recently discontinued models like the Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Malibu, and Cadillac XT4. Full-size SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade also performed, respectively. Buick ranked as GM’s least American brand, with the Enclave as its only U.S.-built model.
The Corvette’s reputation as “America’s Sports Car” showcases dedication to the brand. It maintains the distinction of being one of the world’s longest continuously produced sports cars. With the Corvette ranking 12th in 2024 made in America auto index, we cannot deny the fact that the Corvette has really stepped their game up in this generation. Who knew there was such stiff competition for North American parts source rankings? We think it’s a good thing to fight over.
