Dream Defender: ECD Automotive Design’s Land Rover Project S²

Award-winning custom Land Rover builder ECD Automotive Design has just unveiled specs on its latest D110 creation, along with a handful of images of the restomod Defender. Labeled under the brand’s “Heritage Collection” banner, this particular project is entitled: Project S², and retains more of a classic factory look than an overly aggressive modern monster presence.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with ECD Automotive Design, the company works exclusively with Land Rover/Range Rover platforms and is located in Kissimmee, Florida. Cranking-out around 40 vehicles annually, ECD specializes in producing what it refers to as “high-end luxury vehicles that combine classic English beauty with innovation and modern luxury.” Each vehicle is a hand-built one-off that takes upwards of 2,200 hours to complete by master-certified craftsmen.

Background out of the way, it’s worth noting that this particular custom Land Rover D110 comes finished in a classic, full-gloss Grasmere Green OEM paint scheme, with matching steel wheels and a white roof for added contrast. Tom Humble, co-owner of ECD. Automotive Design explains that, “The owner of his D110 didn’t want to distract from the clean look of the exterior, so we went with a Safety Devices internal roll-cage.” It’s a move that adds rigidity and safety without unnecessarily adding external lines.

Speaking of interior mods, we’re a huge fan of how ECD gave Project S² features that focus on modern amenities and creature comforts, with luxury and tech backing it all up, but in such a way that it does not diverge from the classic feel of the vehicle. For instance, even though there’s an Alpine infotainment system in the dash that comes equipped with Apple CarPlay, wireless charging in the center console, USB ports all around, and an eight-speaker JL Audio sound system, these components actually look like they belong in this Land Rover.

Maybe it’s the classic gauge cluster, wood-grain MOMO steering wheel, or the jumper seats in the rear, or ECD’s use of Rugata Brown and plush black leather that help tie it all together, but this has to be one of the slickest restomod 4×4 interiors we’ve ever seen. Oh, and let’s not forget the manual shifter in the center and the corresponding range selector next to it, which in true JLR form, honors both function and form.

This leads us to the powerplant portion of Project S², which is about as bulletproof as it gets in regard to performance and proven reliability. Beneath the bonnet lies a 5.3-liter Chevrolet LC9 V8 engine that has been attached to a six-speed manual transmission. It also comes with a custom exhaust system for additional grunt and growl.

Although pricing for something like this varies heavily upon the modifications required and direction you want, it’s safe to say that something this customized is going to set you back a pretty penny. But hey, some people have ample amounts of both money and interest in classic Land Rover automobiles. If that sounds like you, head over to the ECD website to find out more.
