Late last month, 43-year-old CarMax salesman Warren Smale lost his life just moments into a test drive of a C6 Corvette in Ontario, California with 28-year-old Alex Demetro of Union City, California behind the wheel. Demetro was arrested for a number of charges, including driving while under the influence, and taken into custody on February 23, the day of the crash.
According to KTLA.com, the next morning at around 5am Demetro posted $100,000 bail and was released. On March 7, he missed a scheduled court appearance, and according to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, he is now considered a fugitive. At that hearing, he was charged in absentia with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving while under the influence of a drug causing injury, and driving with privilege suspended or revoked with priors.
According to the criminal complaint, those priors were convictions for driving with a suspended license, once in 2009 and twice in 2013.
While we don’t know what method Demetro used to pay his bail, it’s likely that it was through a bond agency where it’s possible to pay 10 percent of the bail amount in nonrefundable fees in exchange for the agency putting up the entire bond amount. If that’s the case, he has to be high up on their skip tracer’s hit list of fugitives to capture.
Demetro is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes. If you have information on his location, contact Ontario police Officer Brian Olivo at 909-395-4646 or call 800-78-CRIME to leave an anonymous tip.
