When it comes to vintage GM performance cars, original examples with full documentation and interesting backstories are the hot ticket with today’s collectors. Chrome bumpered 1970 1/2 to 1973 F-bodies are a perfect example of this. They are so revered among muscle heads that unless its a real dog, cutting up a chrome bumpered car no longer makes sense, morally or financially.

Blown LS3 with 3.3L Lysholm blower makes monster power. Looks right at home under 2nd Gen F-body hood.
That’s what’s so great about the rubber bumpered Camaros and Firebirds from the late seventies and early eighties. Because GM made hundreds of thousands of them, modernizing them with big horsepower and the latest in suspension technology is easy and you don’t have to worry about cutting up an original car or any of that matching numbers or stencil marks on the chassis nonsense.
And if there were ever a poster child for a ferocious rubber bumpered 2nd Gen, it’s this ’80 Trans Am that popped up on Ebay.
Built by Brad Riekoff and his crew at West Bend Dyno Tuning in West Bend, Wisconsin, this 1000 HP Trans Am is off the charts. According to West Bend, this ‘Bird has the joint efforts of over 31 manufacturers and several thousand hours of labor. Not to mention $125k in parts. It was on display at SEMA 2013, featured in several magazines, TV coverage and competed in several national events including the Optima Street Car Challenge and the Heidts Performance Challenge where it was the overall winner.
Now we know why the chicken screams.
It’s available today at a BIN (Buy it now) price of $95k, O.B.O. It would make a great Christmas gift.
Smog motor and malaise era performance cured once and for all.
