GM’s revival of Cadillac was doing well there for a while, though as of late it seems to have hit a few snags. For example, development of the new ATS platform was problematic, though it seems as though the car has come out for the better despite any technical snafus. But the big Caddy, the XTS, is a whole other story.
We weren’t the only ones disappointed to hear that the XTS would be available in either front-or-all-wheel drive. According to a new report from Car & Driver though, GM has heard the collective groan, and is reportedly already working on a rear-drive successor to the XTS due out around 2015.
So it seems Cadillac is at least thinking and listening to what buyers are interested in. Take the Cadillac Ciel concept, which paired a hybrid system with a twin-turbo V6 engine, all in a massive four-door rear-drive convertible. That was totally Cadillac. But the V6-only XTS? Meh.
Car & Driver reports that GM is working on a new, rear-drive platform called “Omega”. This rear-drive platform is said to have a maximum length of 207 inches. Now that’s a big Caddy, and it will require a big engine to motivate it. The Omega platform will serve as a mid-to-big halo car, and will hopefully represent a return of the huge, opulent Cadillacs of lore.
An eight-speed automatic transmission will back one of two V6 engines, including a twin-turbo we’ve been hearing plenty of rumors about. A “mystery V8” may also be in the works, which gets our hearts all aflutter with speculation. Whatever the Omega Caddy turns out to be, it already sounds better than the current boat anchor of a sedan. Seems to us like the current XTS is just a placeholder, and we’ll have to wait a few more years for a proper big Cadillac once again.
