How To Make H-, X-, And Y-Pipes, Along With Tubing Transitions

Being an EngineLabs reader, you probably consider yourself to be in the more advanced segment of enthusiasts. You likely not only prefer to do things yourself, but also have a burning need to understand how things are made and how they work—we’d guess more so than the average bear. To that end, we bring you this video from The Fabrication Series channel on YouTube.

In this video, Justin the Fabricator not only shows you how various exhaust transitions are made, but the reasoning behind the process, along with the associated math to make everything fit together once you’ve made your cuts.

Also of note, while not mentioned in the video, is how some of these techniques—especially the Y-pipe creation—could be applied to the fabrication of both hot and cold-side turbocharger piping, with an exhaust merge of two exhaust banks into a single turbine, or for twin-turbo outlets feeding into a single throttle body.

Part of what Justin discusses is the difference between “parallel” and “splayed” or “straight” junctions, as they are one of the most confused terms used when referring to junctions. Regardless of what direction the tubes go post-junction, if the junction incorporates only straight angles, it is splayed, while if curves are incorporated, it is a parallel junction. This is a key distinction in the planning of your fabrication project planning.

Arguably, the most challenging part of the fabrication of these parts is making the precise cuts required. Having solid, heavy-duty equipment is a key factor in any fabrication attempt.

He also walks you through the process of making your own parallel, splayed, and hybrid X-pipe junctions, along with the techniques, measurements, and calculations to make high-end quality connectors. In addition to X-pipes, Y-pipes and H-pipes (or balance pipes) are also covered.

While there is far too much information in The Fabrication Series’ video for us to cover without creating an in-depth tech article, we can definitely say it’s worth the time to watch. Even if you don’t have any intention of picking up a bandsaw and TIG torch, watching the process and learning the calculations is immensely fascinating.

If you are a DIY’er and enjoy working with metal, then we highly recommend that you check out Justin’s other videos on The Fabrication Series channel, as the knowledge he shares covers a wide range of fabrication topics that will really elevate your DIY fabrication game.

While the calculations to make this parallel-to-splayed X-pipe may look intimidating, Justin explains the theories and calculations required with the effectiveness of your favorite teacher.
