LSX Drag Radial and Real Street Ready To Excite At Norwalk

Brian Black’s stunning Pontiac is cleaner than most show cars.

The Chevy High Performance LSX Challenge Series will roll into Norwalk and the Summit Motorsports Park August 21-24th as part of the NMCA racing series.  Two of the most exciting heads-up classes with the most radical LSX powered cars is Real Street and Drag Radial. All of these cars have an LSX-based motor under the hood and you will see turbos, superchargers, and tons of nitrous between the two classes.  Here is a quick overview of a few of the totally bad ass cars that will be competing at Norwalk.

LSX Drag Radial

Brian Black is looking to bring his show car quality race car to Ohio to make some noise.  One of several racers to make the move from nitrous to boosted power, Black has bolted up a big old F1X ProCharger to the front of his Pontiac. The 433-inch Baxter Racing Engines-powered machine had some Midwest Chassis parts added and is looking to turn up the boost for this event.

The Ohio Boys Racing team of Mike Brown and Mark Koehler have each won the LSX Drag Radial crown over the past two seasons. Brown has been on a tear, winning almost every race in the Midwest this season. Koehler had his car updated with more safety features and recently won the Xtereme Outlaws Buckeye Nationals event.

Andy Essary has his car in full thrash-mode to make the Norwalk event. The “Murderbird”, as he calls it, went on a big diet at Midwest Chassis and is currently at Speed Inc. in Illinois getting a new turbo kit done.  Essary has always been in the mix each race but could be a force this year.

Anthony Manna doubled down for this year going to twin 88mm turbos on the front of his Camaro. The AES powered F-body piloted by Manna has been to the winners circle before and made the finals of the Atlanta race in 2013.

Mark Carlyle is charging hard for his first LSX Drag Radial crown in 2014.

Then there’s Mark Carlyle, the current record holder in LSX Drag Radial and the most recent winner of the class at the 2014 Chevy High Performance Nationals earlier this year. For 2014, Carlyle has made only minor changes to his combo that should allow for more power, but he now has spares of everything so his downtime is minimal if there is breakage.

Real Street

In Real Street Josh Pratt is looking to make some noise with his Trans Am. At the LSX event in Atlanta this year Pratt put the car on the bumper doing some minor damage, burin the process, showed he was making some serious power. This year he has switched to a 339 cubic inch engine topped with Trick Flow heads to up his game.

Will Ray Litz have enough to make a run for the Real Street title?

Ray Bulach is another racer that made the jump from giggle juice to boost in his six-speed Camaro, and that seems to be working well. Recently Bulach reset the six-speed LSX record running a blistering 8.63 and still has more left to turn the wick up with.  Look for Bulach’s blue bullet to be towards the top of the qualifying sheet at Norwalk.

One of the bigger story lines is Ray Litz and his ERL-powered Camaro, making the switch to Real Street. Moving to an RPM TH400 transmission, 76mm Garrett turbo, and All Pro 12-4 heads, Litz is not taking this switch lightly. The question is, will this be enough to run with the top dogs in the class?

These are just a few of the cars and drivers that will be bringing everything they have to Summit Motorsports Park for the LSX Challenge Series.  Make sure you check out Dragzine’s photo coverage of all the NMCA action at this event!
