Call the LS “cookie cutter”, call it “overdone”, call it whatever you want, just don’t call it slow. LS engines are currently powering some of the fastest cars on the planet and they are dirt cheap. Say what you will about them, but don’t be surprised when some rag-tag jalopy pulls to the line and blows your doors off and try not to be too angry when you find out it’s a stock bottom end with hundreds of thousands of miles on it.

We’re pretty sure that’s how this Nissan Patrol is making people feel right now. In case you are unaware just what exactly a Nissan Patrol is, it’s like a bigger, badder version of an Xterra. We don’t really have anything comparable to it here in the states, but it is wildly popular outside U.S. borders — specifically in the Middle East and apparently Australia, which is where this video comes to us from.

Daniel, the guy who pieced this clever bit of automotive ingenuity together, had just shown up to the track for the first time with his ride. The build consists of a 180,000-kilometer (111,000-mile) stock bottom end LS1 with a couple of Garrett snails strapped to the side via custom fabricated exhaust manifolds. Judging by the fab work under the hood, Daniel, or someone he’s particularly good friends with, is quite the metal worker. The turbos are a set of Garrett GT35Rs modulated by a set of HyperGate 45mm wastegates from Turbosmart. The whole thing marches to the orders of a factory GM computer which injects E85 into the mix.

The build is topped off by a Holley Hi-Ram and a V-banded 102mm throttle body. And while Daniel is only throwing 16 pounds of boost at the mill, it still makes a stout 645 ponies at the wheels (or 481 kW for those on the other side of the pond). Power is routed through a Turbo 400 transmission and, surprisingly, sends power out back to the stock Nissan rear end which then splits the power between two massive Mickey Thompson 33X10.50 slicks; they sit at quite the juxtaposition to the brake-dust coated steel front wheels. 

And while the Patrol is no featherweight, the power coming out of the SBE LS1 is enough to propel the SUV to sub-11-second quarter-mile passes. Not bad, especially considering it is Daniel’s first time at the track. Obviously, the suspension has received quite a bit of work and seems up to the task of planting all that power, even if it does look like the Patrol might tip over in the process.

Whether or not it’s your cup of tea, this thing does look like it would be a blast to drive and you have to at least admire all of the work done under the hood. That fab work is second to none. Those Aussies sure know how to build them and we’re sure this thing has surprised more than its fair share of unsuspecting victims.
