Playing Shortstop With BMR Suspension’s 15″ Wheel Brake Conversion

Stopping short… This smooth move isn’t just reserved for the likes of Cosmo Kramer and George Costanza’s old man anymore, all thanks to the guys over at BMR Suspension. Blatant Seinfeld references aside, the nuts and bolts of today’s topic is actually quite serious. Track braking safety matters, and don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

BMR Suspension has gone to great lengths to provide drivers of the 2010-2015 generation of the Chevrolet Camaro with not only additional safety perks, but an excuse to stuff some extra meaty rubber and smaller wheels out back. An all-encompassing aftermarket upgrade that is commonly referred to as the BMR 15-inch Brake Conversion Kit, or part number BCP001

Although BMR Suspension is quick to admit that it designed this kit so it could work in conjunction with street machines, the obvious underlying intent of providing drag racers with an upper hand is all too obvious. A multi-piece product that not only negates all of the weak points found within the stock rear brakes and spindles of this particular chassis, but grants access to the highly coveted 15-inch wheel configuration.

Engineered to be a complete bolt-in upgrade from start to finish, with zero need for cutting, welding, chassis, or suspension modification along the way, BMR’s BCP001 Brake Conversion is a clear standout when it comes to ease of installation and end results.

However, it is the notion of gaining access to the market’s bevy of 15-inch wheel options, and all of the track-oriented tire compounds that drag fanatics prefer to ensconce their race alloys in that really gets our gas-ported pistons pumping.

Sure, stopping power matters… a lot. But being simultaneously granted enough clearance to plop beefier drag race rubber out back, well that’s just sprinkles on the doughnut.

Serving as the cornerstone of this kit is a set of specialized spindles and BMR’s custom brake caliper brackets, which allow the rear hubs to be outfitted with Wilwood brakes built specifically with this application in mind. Spherical bearings replace rubber bushings for a significant reduction in deflection, and a far more grounded feeling rear end. Being that suspension geometry is relatively unaffected, comfort and ride height remain on par with that of the factory performance feel GM originally intended for the 2010-2015 Camaro.

As with all of its kits, BMR Suspension’s BCP001 brake conversion kits come clad in a durable black coating for longevity and stealth and is 100-percent engineered and manufactured in the United States. Just be prepared to spend around five to six hours installing this kit, as it does require a fair deal of elbow grease a cold beverage or two, and perhaps a little prayer and/or profanity if a seized bolt is encountered along the way.

To make sure that every component is ship-shape and ready to race, BMR takes the extra step and gives every product it produces a fat dose of fixture-welding. You know, just because there’s this crucial little thing called “quality control.” Bead-blasted and powder-coated on-premise at BMR, each piece is then sent off to assembly and packaging for full closed-loop operations at every stage.
