Sound Regulations Could Ban C7 Corvette From South Korea

Importing a vehicle like a Corvette can be tricky business, but for Corvette enthusiasts in South Korea, it appears that odd regulations will prevent the C7 Corvette from ever hitting their streets. Why you ask? Because the C7 Corvette is just to loud…

So how did we catch of word of this nonsense? Well, on November 7, 2014, a “Chevrolet Track Day” took place at the Yongin Speedway for GM Korea. This event allowed test-drives of the new 2015 Aveo, Cruze, and Trax. After the test drives, there was a press conference held which allowed reporters to ask some important questions regarding the company’s plans for the new car models including the C7 Corvette Stingray. The hot topics included whether or not the Impala will be available in Korea and if the company will import the C7 Corvette.

Due to the engine noise regulations in Korea, the C7 Corvette Stingray may be banned from driving on their roads. According to KoreaBizWire.com, the 460 horsepower 6.2L LT1 V8 is too noisy to pass the regulations regarding automobile noise.

The Chevrolet Korea CEO Sergio Rocha explained, “The launch of the seventh-generation Corvette is being delayed indefinitely due to Korea’s regulation on automobile noise. Although such regulatory stance may benefit the industry in the short run, I wonder if that’s something that should be in place for a long time.”

Rocha also mentioned that, “only 12 Corvettes are imported to Korea a year.” So at this time, it appears that the car will remain illegal in South Korea, but we still hold out hope for our Korean GM enthusiasts. Hopefully one day they will have the opportunity to purchase this piece of brilliant engineering.
