Major automakers often use big races like the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 as a place to show off new models as pace cars. The Mustang, Camaro, and Corvette have all had plenty of time as pace cars, and aftermarket tuners have followed suit.
Camaro5 reports that MTI Racing has built a 1,000 horsepower, “Twincharged” Chevrolet Camaro, and this awesome car was selected to be the pace car at the inaugural NARRA US GT race at Road Atlanta late last month.
NARRA stands for the North American Road Racing Association, which has actually been around since 1993. 2011 Represents the first year of their new series, the US GT, where dozens of cars (mostly Vipers and Corvettes) duke it out for top spots in the series. Other cars elegible to join the series are BMW’s, Porsches, Lamborghini’s, Ferraris, and more. The series is hosted by Tom Hnatiw and these are the same guys behind the Dodge Viper Cup.
But lets talk about that sweet Camaro. Dual 61mm rear-mount turbochargers feed the Magnuson supercharger, helping the 6.2 liter LS3 V8 engine make around 1,000 horsepower. The pace car driver was Terry Earwood even said he “…would’ve stayed out there and joined with the other cars,” if he had his helmet. Add in a host of suspension, all done by MTI Racing, and you’ve got a mighty Camaro with the best of both worlds. Our only question is, where’s the nitrous?
